Figure 12.15

A close object that contains no interior detail will appear more remote than an elaborately rendered background area, and vice versa.

Structure: The Mind’s Eye

Whose viewpoint is the action seen from? Do we see it as a “fly on the wall” or from the perspective of one of the characters? Staging will affect the mood of the scene. It can reveal subliminal meanings or subtexts for the scene that are not indicated in the dialogue.

Figure 12.16 (1) illustrates a very old joke, “A kangaroo walks into a bar.” Example (1) is a literal representation of this. But a kangaroo can move in a more interesting manner. So example (2) has the kangaroo hopping into the bar. A second panel is needed to complete the action in Scene 1 as the animal lands on the barstool and orders a beer. Versions 1 and 2 both then cut to a neutral close-up of the bartender (Scene 2) where he says his line. (A neutral angle lacking a strong indication of camera direction allows us to cut to either one of the over the shoulder shots in Scene 3 without “crossing the line.”)
